The KINNECT Difference

Reduce workplace musculoskeletal injuries through simple, practical and realistic manual handling training that creates behaviour change within the workforce.

Program Overview

KINNECT’s SmartMove Manual Handling programs are designed to change your people’s behaviours when it comes to manual handling, reducing their risk of injury.

We do not do death by powerpoint! Our manual handling programs are interactive in nature being centred around on the job manual handling training. Our manual handling programs are delivered at the workplace not in a classroom, rather in the field with the workforce. Our manual handling programs are delivered by tertiary qualified Allied Health Professionals who hold a comprehensive understanding of best practice biomechanics and preventative measures that when incorporate into day to day operations, prevent musculoskeletal injuries from occuring.

The program runs for a total of 90 minutes, comprising of a short theoretical presentation followed by a larger practical component to reinforce learning and behavioural change. The practical component is conducted on the job, with the workers performing and/or simulating normal manual handling tasks while applying the education and techniques learnt earlier.

The theoretical presentation includes:

  • Best practice manual handling principles
  • Understanding of body biomechanics and spinal loading
  • Tissue fatigue
  • Movement efficiency
  • The anatomy and physiology of musculoskeletal injuries
  • Simple, practical and realistic manual handling techniques

KINNECT caps session participants to a maximum of 20 workers per session. This is to ensure maximum employee engagement and to allow sufficient time for the practical session to be conducted.

The manual handling training can be accompanied by the development and implementation of a job specific pre-start stretching program to further reinforce the message of injury prevention.

Customisation

KINNECT offer the ability to customise your manual handling training program delivered to your workforce, incorporating specific education on how to safely perform identified high risk manual handling tasks. As part of this customisation, the KINNECT consultant will attend the workplace prior to the scheduled training date to conduct a review of the workplace and the hazardous manual tasks performed. During this visit photographs and/or video will be captured of specific manual tasks being performed. These photographs and/or videos will be incorporated into the training materials, ensuring the education provided specifically addresses the manual handling risks within your workplace.

How it Works

Prior to the Training

KINNECT will contact you to confirm the location where the training is to be conducted as well as the date and time. During this call we will confirm participant numbers and whether job specific customisation of the training material is required.

A check as to whether specific PPE and/or site inductions are required will occur. In addition we will confirm the most appropriate means of training delivery and whether or not a summary report is required.

On the Day

The Allied Health Professional will attend the workplace 15 minutes prior to the training to meet with the key stakeholders and prepare for the delivery of the training. Upon completion of the training program, a competency assessment is completed by all participants with these later being collated and supplied to the workplace.

Following the Training

Within 24 hours of the training being finialised, KINNECT will develop a manual handling summary report (if requested). Included within this summary report is:

  • Participant numbers
  • Summary of the education provided
  • Recommendations regarding behavioural and/or engineering changes
  • Best practice approach to job specific tasks

Digital certificates of completion can be issued to the workplace for distribution to participants (additional fees apply).

“KINNECT have contributed to improving our Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) by 81%, our Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR) by 66% and our Disabling Injury Severity Rate (DISR) by 56% at one of our underground sites with their SmartMove Program.  A highlight of the program has been the zero down time due to their on the job approach.”

FAQ

Who delivers the training?

Our Manual Handling Training programs are delivered by tertiary qualified allied health professionals – Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Accredited Exercise Physiologists. Our consultants all hold extensive experience in occupational health and risks associated with manual tasks.

What is a musculoskeletal disorder?

Musculoskeletal disorders, or MSDs, are injuries or diseases of the musculoskeletal system. The role of the musculoskeletal system is to support and protect the body and includes the skeleton, joints, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and other connective binding tissue. Musculoskeletal disorders can occur suddenly or happen over time and do not include fractures or dislocations caused by entrapment or crushing. Rapidly occurring MSDs are usually due to sudden unexpected forces whereas MSDs that occur over time are due to continuous overuse, including static body positions. However, it is possible for injuries to occur as a combination when body tissue has been weakened and is therefore more prone to sudden injury from lower forces.

Examples and symptoms of MSDs caused by hazardous manual tasks include:

  • Acute or chronic pain
  • Sprains and strains
  • Soft tissue injuries, e.g. hernias
  • Back injury
  • Muscular and vascular disorders
  • Injuries or degeneration of joints and bones
  • Nerve injuries e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome

How long is the training?

The training runs for a total of 90 minutes, comprising of approximately 30-45 minutes of theoretical training, followed by 45 – 60 minute on the job practical session.

What facilities are required for the training?

KINNECT requires access to either a TV (with HDMI input) or a projector. Should the training be conducted onsite without access to either of these items, KINNECT will deliver the training and provide participants with handout materials.

Does KINNECT offer awareness materials?

KINNECT has a wide range of manual handling awareness materials for purchase. Such materials include:

  • Posters (variety of sizes)
  • Manual Handling Pocket Guide Books
  • Stretch Cards
